Calligraphy: Inscribed and signed, with two seals of Chen Jinghong
Dated seventh month, guisi year (1953)
SPECIALIST’S NOTE: Zhang Shaoshi, studied paintings under his uncle Zhang Chunchu (1869-1943), who was a student of Geshan School master Ju Lian (1828-1904). He later also studied under Deng Fen (1894-1964). Zhang was most adept in painting flower and birds genre, especially in painting peony, and was known as “King of Peony”.
Chen Jinghong, born in Shunde, lived in Shanghai in his early years and studied calligraphy under Kang Youwei (1858-1927), specialized in cursive clerical script. He was an important calligrapher of Hong Kong.
