Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn (1606-1669) Christ crucified between the two Thieves: 'The Three Crosses' (B., Holl. 78; H. 270) drypoint with engraving, 1653 - circa 1661, watermark Strasbourg Bend (Hinterding D.a.b.; Ash & Fletcher 35 D.a.), a magnificent impression of the fourth state (of five), printing with rich burr and dramatic contrasts, with selectively wiped highlights on the body of Christ, above His head, underneath the Cross and on the two riders to the left of the Cross, printing with a fingerprint at the lower right plate edge, with thread margins, a thinly backed horizontal fold through the upper part of the subject, an unobtrusive vertical central crease in the lower part of the subject with an associated short tear at the lower sheet edge, some short, backed tears at the upper sheet edge, a scuffed spot in the densely hatched area in the lower left corner, and a few other, very minor defects P. 387 x 453 mm., S. 388 x 455 mm.
